As the weather warms (bit by bit), it’s time to think about enjoying trails and paths by going strolling and hiking or sitting in the sun instead of skiing (or slipping or slogging). On Tuesday, learn how to hike happy at Center for Coastal Studies’ Tuesday Night Lights. And there are lots of other fun ways to move through the week—like this Saturday’s contra dance at West Homer Elementary or TRAILS’ weekly qi gong and tail chi class every Thursday at the Senior Center. Tai Chi is a slow and gentle movement practice from China that is gaining popularity in the United States. Tai Chi provides exercise that enhances strength and stamina while improving balance and bone density. The practice helps reduce stress and increases body awareness. The gentle movements are suitable for all ages and all fitness levels.
The Homer Senior Center has been in partnership with the Independent Living Center’s TRAILS program to host a weekly Tai Chi class on Thursdays at 3:00. We meet in the movement room at the Senior Center. Classes are also being offered through the Seward and Kenai Senor Centers but you will have to contact them for their schedules.
As the instructor, I was recently able to travel to a training in Kenai and become certified to teach Tai Chi for Arthritis and Falls Prevention. Prior to this I had been teaching a more complex Tai Chi form that was difficult for some to learn. Tai Chi for Arthritis retains the core principals of improving balance and strength but with a simplified movement routine. This program was created by family physician and Tai Chi expert Dr. Paul Lam. He studied the effects of Tai Chi for Arthritis and found that the program was successful in improving health, balance and eased the discomfort of Arthritis. Although the program is primarily done standing and stepping, it can be adapted to a seated position and retains many of the stretching and calming benefits.
We will continue our weekly Tai Chi classes but will change the focus to the Tai Chi for Arthritis program. I’d like to invite anyone that has been curious about Tai Chi to try our class. We have a nice group people practicing together that are very supportive to new people trying out the art. Some fun highlights this week include tomorrow’s Easter Bazaar, Tela’s presentation on Thursday, and TRAILS’ potluck and bonfire on Friday at Bishop’s Beach.

It's gonna be a super fun, super busy week, beginning with an Easter Bazaar this Saturday, a Sunday poetry workshop, and a Monday poetry reading. Then there are all kinds of chances to learn and explore this week at places like Islands and Ocean, Wynn Nature Center, and Center for Coastal Studies! And you can get out and play in fresh snow!
A highlight worth noting is the FREE movie on Thursday at the DeStig Film Festival: The Ringer, starts at 6:30 at the Homer Theater.

A special highlight for the coming week is the 2018 Kachemak Bay Science Conference at Islands and Ocean Visitor Center March 7-10. What's special is that the intended audience is US--the public--not other scientists. So come learn some fascinating things about the place we live. And registration is FREE! And don't forget about the meeting to learn more about local transportation planning (including things like taxi vouchers). The drop-in open house about local transportation planning is on Monday, 4-6 pm, at the City Hall Council Chamber. Contact TRAILS if you need a ride!
